Manufacturing 21 Coalition
Center for Manufacturing and Infrastructure Engineering
Portland, Oregon, USA
Manufacturing 21 Coalition is a private-public partnership formed to address the innovation needs of Oregon and southwest Washington's materials industries. A key objective of the coalition is to create the Center for Manufacturing and Infrastructure Engineering. We worked together with the Coalition to develop a common vision for the center that stands as a research bridge between industry and education.
We held stakeholder strategy sessions that included 40 private companies, three universities, and four government associations that continuously informed the design process. From the feedback, our team prepared a building program, conceptual design imagery, planning diagrams, and a class 5 cost estimate to secure funding approval and facilitate site selection. These studies integrated the planning requirements with the visionary goals of the Coalition, creating a dynamic facility.
The building program we developed is comprised of three primary areas. The research sector includes a large-scale seismic testing lab, high-bay open labs, and technical support spaces. The education component spans outcomes from tours by K-12 school groups to classroom and support spaces for local community colleges. The central office and meeting areas bring staff from each lab together, fostering cross-discipline interaction.
