IDC Architects recently provided design for the renovation of office space on the Denver campus of parent company CH2M HILL. The fifth floor of the West Building includes workspace for corporate executives, corporate affairs, finance, business group services, and human resources.
Reflecting CH2M HILL's ongoing efforts to create a more fluid organization, an open floor plan provides a generous yet efficient environment for employees, clients, vendors and partners.
Almost every employee on this floor, from the Chief Executive Officer to the public relations team and technologists, now enjoys an open-office work environment. The new plan eliminates physical barriers that inhibit communication and team interaction, to create an inviting and airy layout that takes advantage of the sunlight entering through surrounding window walls. Employees are encouraged to organize and decorate their workspaces to reflect the work they do and their individual personalities. Art and awards are placed in conference rooms, hallways, and other common areas throughout the office. Screen displays located by the elevators keep employees and visitors informed about ongoing CH2M HILL projects and activities.
Open work/meeting areas feature data access outlets, whiteboards, and special equipment (e.g., flat screen panels) to support a more creative and collaborative work environment. Employees can hold informal meetings in open seating areas. Quiet Rooms throughout the floor provide personal space for employees to make private phone calls or conduct private conversations.
The Break Room features booths and tables that provide informal places for employees to connect throughout the workday and are regularly occupied with employees holding informal meetings. To support employees visiting from different locations, individual workspaces have data access outlets, phones and locked cabinets for short-term use. Often, visiting teleworkers use this space for a few hours at a time when they are in-between meetings.
Additional upgrades include a technology-enabled Talent Room specifically designed to support CH2M HILL's talent development and succession planning. Meetings held in this space give senior leadership access to key succession and talent development information, and help incorporate employee development into every decision. This room includes a flexible smart table with multiple data and electrical access outlets, a drop-down projection screen, two flat-panel screens, Egan boards, and whiteboards, allowing teams to effectively manage critical employee development services.
Finally, a newly renovated boardroom equipped with state-of-the-art audio visual technology enables the leaders of the 30,000 strong-employee owned company to collaborate in a modernized space.
Employees at all levels work side-by-side, eliminating the office/cubicle mentality, facilitating higher levels of interaction and communication, and increasing time spent on mentoring and problem solving.
