Axcelis Technologies, Inc. is a leading manufacturer of semiconductor process equipment. IDCA was charged with designing a corporate headquarters whose readily identifiable and dynamic building form would be recognizable worldwide.
Planned as an expansion to an existing manufacturing and support facility, the program included a demonstration cleanroom and training facility, dining room, auditorium, and corporate offices. To achieve the client's goals, substantial changes were required to existing building entrances, relationships, and site-wide circulation. The design solution expresses the diverse programming functions through the interplay of three volumes around a stone-clad curved wall element that marks the new site and building's entry and defines the corporate “street.” Serving as the building lobby and demonstration cleanroom viewing corridor, the corporate street is the unifying interior element and establishes a primary circulation spine bridging the new and existing buildings. Distinctive custom designed signage and graphics components provide way-finding and further enhance the three-story sunlight filled lobby/corridor. A restrained material palette of domestic limestone, flat champagne metallic metal panels, and a high-performance curtain wall system complements the existing facilities.
