University of Southampton

Southampton, England

We were commissioned, in association with UK firms Jestico + Wiles and Gifford, by the University to design a world-leading research facility accommodating multiple laboratories and administrative functions. The facility will bring together silicon, nanotechnology, and biotech processes into one state-of-the-art unit, facilitating cooperation and interface between these increasingly overlapping disciplines. The new facility is designed to minimize its footprint while allowing natural light and air to penetrate as much of the office and research space as possible.

The building plan we provided also maximizes the use of sustainable materials and practices and minimizes energy consumption through the use of an evaporation-free cooling system, variable frequency drives and high efficiency motors on the engineering systems, natural ventilation throughout the office areas, and recirculation of rainwater to minimize chemical usage associated with softening cleanroom-use water. At completion, the 100,000 SF building will house 16,146 SF of flexible cleanroom space and 12,917 SF of technical and research laboratories.
