Microelectronics R&D Center
Confidential Client
Hillsboro, Oregon, USA
This client's challenge to our project design team was to design a new corporate office building that would integrate with and reinforce the well-established corporate R&D campus' 16-year-long sustainable master plan. The project would address unique program requirements, support adjacent high-tech research/manufacturing functions, provide cost-efficient design solutions without compromising quality, and offer a lively and refreshing environment for a diverse group of research and development staff. The third of an anticipated six research, development, and manufacturing facilities, this building creates an "incubating" environment capable of recruiting, retaining, and empowering the world's leading microelectronics researchers. The client's workplace culture of 100% open plan cubicles is organized around a strong central core containing support functions, employee meeting and collaboration space, and central circulation functions.
Floor-to-floor employee interaction is further enhanced by stairs located in each quadrant of the floor plan. Placed at the perimeter of the building, these glass-walled vertical circulation elements provide employees with views and high levels of natural light, while creating circulation links to the "campus community." Amenities such as vibrant cafeterias, courtyards, and quiet respite areas were considered essential in maintaining this industry leader's edge.
