MEDRAD Global Center
Warrendale, Pennsylvania, USA
In 2005, MEDRAD, Inc. began searching for a location to build its new corporate headquarters. IDC Architects, teaming with CB Richard Ellis (CBRE), was awarded the project in a limited design competition against four other architect/developer teams. The selected site was in the Pittsburgh region at Tech 21 Park, a sustainable research park previously master planned by IDCA.
The new 125,000 SF headquarters building contains offices, training rooms, a food service area, a call center, and a data center. The Tech 21 site is a beautiful, forested, hilly setting with a wooded ridgeline dominating the terrain. MEDRAD is a very employee-centered company, and one of its major requirements was to have a building where everybody had access to daylight and views. IDCA's solution was a building designed as a "vessel for catching light," nestled into the brow of a south-facing hill, with office wings splayed to follow the path of the sun. The building is anchored by a central three-story Great Hall that houses food service and becomes the focal point of employee interaction and collaboration. The facility received the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED® Gold certification in 2008.
